The monastery and its setting

Mănăstirea Sfinții Voievozi stands beside DN 2A in southern Slobozia, with the Ialomița River across the road and an earth embankment. The church’s bell tower is a prominent landmark visible to travellers approaching the city.

It is the oldest existing monastery in the Diocese of Slobozia and Călărași and in the Bărăgan Plain. Its story includes several changes in status: it became a parish church in 1864, then the Episcopal Cathedral when the diocese was established in 1994.

It was re-established as a monastery for nuns in 1998 and became a monastery for monks on 27 August 2009.

The church is dedicated to Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Its iconostasis is made of wood and stucco, with the Archangels shown in its upper corners and icons of twelve prophets along its sides. The monastery also has a second dedication, Izvorul Tămăduirii, granted in 2009; its first celebration was held in 2010.

How do you get from Amara to the monastery?

The monastery is in Slobozia, so plan for a journey from Amara rather than a walk within Amara. If you are starting from Hotel Heaven, a two-star hotel in Amara, confirm the exact route and transport options before travelling.

Slobozia has bus, minibus and train connections with Bucharest and nearby towns. You can also plan a broader visit with a day trip to Slobozia from Amara.
